Project Name: Petoskey Stadium
Manufacturer: MDC Contracting
Installer: Atlas Electric
Project Location: Petoskey, MI
Year Built: 2015
In the Summer of 2015, Petoskey Public Schools broke ground on a brand new stadium for its athletic programs. With the current stadium miles away from campus and unable to accommodate the masses of Fighting Northmen fans, a new facility was desperately needed.
The stadium would provide Petoskey High School with brand new facilities on school grounds to help bolster the Fighting Northmen to victory for many seasons to come. However, the site was very large, and lighting the stadium and surrounding area would require a lot of time and effort to complete effectively and by the deadline.
The 40 new site lights ranged between multiple parking lots, sidewalks, and a roadway. These different areas across the site also required different sizes of foundations, which could have led to further headaches for the contractors who had to install them.
John Richards and his team at Atlas Electric were awarded the electrical portion of the project and were responsible for installing the 40 new lights. Richards decided that Pole Base®, a precast concrete foundational system, would provide the foundations for the site lights due to its speedy installation process, superior aesthetics, and high-grade concrete.
"We were able to save a lot of time and effort by using precast bases on this project. The installation went quickly and we even had the option to install the light poles the same day as the bases,” explained Richards.
Additionally, the rusticated texture was selected for this project to bring an architectural accent and provide a sense of quality that is unique to the project.
Utilizing precast light pole bases also allowed Richards to work on his own schedule, despite poor weather and site conditions. This also made them more efficient with their time, which translated to finishing the project on-time and on-budget.
"Using precast was convenient on this project because the bases were delivered on site, ready to be installed. We didn't have to wait for weather to clear, or a concrete truck, or worry about putting together the form on site, which saved us time,” Richards said.
The Petoskey Stadium Project, to be completed in the summer of 2016, is sure to be a fantastic addition to not only the high school athletic program, but to the city as a whole.
The site lighting foundations, offered a modern look with the Rusticated Face and helped differentiate the site from other local projects that may harbor defects such as spiral lines from cardboard tubing, excessive bug holes from poor vibration, or discoloration from poor quality concrete or protruding rebar.
Overall, the Stadium will be a beautiful addition to the local landscape and the city will be proud to support the Fighting Northmen for generations to come in this outstanding facility.
