Project Name: Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizer Project
Customer: JC Electric
Engineer: Hobbs & Black Associates Inc.
Manufacturer: MDC Contracting
Installer: JC Electric
Project Location: St. Johns, Michigan
Year Built: 2013
In 2013, Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizer was building a new headquarters building in St. Johns, Michigan. This expansive new complex included a beautiful new building and paved parking lots that surrounded the perimeter of the building.
Constructing the parking lot required 21 separate site lights, seven of which needed to include surveillance cameras. Due to the amount of wiring within these 7 site light units, junction boxes were required within the concrete lighting foundations.
When it was time to install the site lighting in the early summer of 2013, rain had been soaking the site for weeks. Originally, the concrete bases for the site lighting were supposed to be created using a cardboard tube forming system. However, the poor weather made it impossible to use this system because the wet conditions would deteriorate the cardboard tubing. Additionally, pouring concrete into the tubing while it was raining could have resulted in an improper ratio of water in the cement mix that would result in a lower psi concrete mix that could damage the structural integrity of the concrete.
To add another layer of complexity to this scenario, every base had a different, labor-intensive conduit template. Fitting 7 units of conduit into a base, with a junction box, anchor bolts, and a rebar cage would be problematic in an uncontrolled/wet setting. These complications made the foundations expensive and labor intensive to install.
Three weeks prior to the next re-scheduled installation time of the site lighting foundations, Pole Base® was brought into the equation. With the ability to ship the concrete foundations to the site with the proper conduit layout, junction boxes, rebar cage, and anchor bolt configuration, the electrical contractor could install the bases regardless of weather or soil conditions on his own schedule.
“The site portion of the project was delayed due to weather multiple times, and we needed junction boxes in a third of the bases on site due to the surveillance cameras mounted on the poles,” said Doug Haviland, President of JC Electric. “It was a very complicated project, and we found that Pole Base was by far the most efficient, most cost-effective, and least labor intensive option for installation.”
The contractors were able to run the wires and conduit and forget about the complications involved with the poured-in-place concrete foundation. In addition, the Pole Base precast foundations were manufactured in a controlled setting, ensuring quality concrete durability.
The Pole Base solution saved the project time and stress, and also a great deal of money. The contractor had already purchased the tubing, rebar, and conduit required for the project as it was originally designed, but was still able to save money with the cost of all the additional materials to remain on hand for future projects.
The Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizer Project features 21 Pole-Base units, accented by the round face, a bevel, and chamfer to add artistic character. Pole Base adds a distinct and unique finish to a site with an already outstanding, architecturally designed facility.
