Precast Light Pole Bases Help Contractor Meet Tight Deadlines Michigan Meijer Stores

As Meijer continued to grow across the Midwest, Halligan Electric was in search of a way to speed the installation of the light pole bases across multiple projects.

“We appreciate the controlled setting the precast bases use rather than the inconsistent elements of pouring bases in the field,” said Travis Herriman or Halligan Electric. Products shown: Light pole base in Round texture.

Pole Base was able to provide a 12-foot-tall base to accommodate larger light poles and the poor soil conditions that were found on site for Halligan Electric. Products shown: Light pole base in Round texture.

THE CHALLENGE

Halligan Electric, a Michigan electrical contractor, has serviced the industry since its founding in 1927 and developed relationships with many companies over time, including Meijer, a major Midwest big-box store chain.

As Meijer grew its business, Halligan Electric was often responsible for the site lighting of the new stores, gas stations, and distribution centers. The installation of the lights and concrete foundations on these projects was frequently rushed due to the grading and paving crews having a short window of time to get the lots ready for operation.

Halligan Electric needed a better way to perform on-site lighting projects so they could stay on time and on budget, all while also maintaining a satisfying aesthetic appeal.

THE SOLUTION

Pole Base, a precast concrete foundational system, proved to be the perfect solution for their needs on large Meijer parking lots. With 18, 24, and 30-inch (0.5, 0.6, 0.8-meter) diameter options available, Pole Base provided the exact sizes needed for these sites.

In one instance, Pole Base provided a 12-foot (3.7-meter) tall base to accommodate larger light poles and poor soil conditions on site.

Following the success of using precast foundations for the light poles on many projects, Halligan Electric chose Pole Base on multiple other projects for Meijer across Michigan. These projects included a store in Alpena, a gas station in Roseville, a distribution center in Lansing, and most recently, a new store in Sault Ste. Marie.

"We started the project in Sault Ste. Marie [in] June of 2016," said Travis Herriman of Halligan Electric. "We chose precast bases because of the consistent quality as well as the fact that Pole Base has a reliable timeline. We are able to install on time and meet our customers compressed schedule."

"We appreciate the controlled setting the precast bases use rather than the inconsistent elements of pouring bases in the field," Herriman continued. "We believe the precast bases are a better product and appreciate having this alternative."

THE OUTCOME

Halligan Electric completed the site lighting on the Sault Ste. Marie project on time in 2016 and provided outstanding service to Meijer. By using Pole Base precast foundations for their projects they were able to perform under tight deadlines while also achieving a high quality finished project.
